Shadow of Rome is a video game for the PlayStation 2console.It is a hybrid fighting/stealth game setin ancient Romeand loosely based around the assassination of JuliusCaesar.

Gameplay

Shadow Of Rome is based on the story of Julius Caesar andthe events that took place after his death. Shadow OfRome has two main types of gameplay. There are close quarterscombat levels involving Agrippa that take place in variousgladiatorial arenas throughout the Roman empire. Secondly, thereare stealth-based puzzle-solving adventure levels intermixedbetween the combat ones involving Octavianus that takeplace in the vicinity of Rome's bases of political power. Inaddition to these two main gameplay types, there are a few levelswhere the player controls Agrippa in chariot races. The viewpoint is third-personperspective behind the hero. Shadow Of Rome can be playedat 'Normal' or 'Hard' difficulty levels. Additionally, once thegame is beaten on both these settings, a new 'Extreme' difficultybecomes available.

The game is divided into 4 chapters. As the game progresses,Agrippa encounters different types of weapons to use. Weapons breakafter repeated use. A Salvo is a unique combat technique thatAgrippa may perform during battle. Performing multiple differentSalvos within a short time period increases the audience'sexcitement, and increases the chance of them throwing newer, moredangerous weapons to Agrippa for his use.

The frequent acquisition of new weapons from the onlookers is amust, since a player's current weapons have only a limiteddurability, and so break after a few strikes/blocks. Again, 'Salvostrings' become an essential part of surviving later in the game.Some of them are unique in that they can only be performed incertain events, or against certain foes.

During Octavianus' levels, the player can collect coins thatallow the player to purchase special items from the variousmerchants at the city gates. These items are, mainly, justdecorations for Octavianus' room. Buying a certain number of itemsunlocks special costumes which Octavianus can wear. Achievingcertain ranks in the arena battles (Bronze, Silver, or Gold) on thevarious difficulty levels will unlock certain secrets like minigames and cheats.Completing an arena battle unlocks it in the Battle Selectionmenu.

Characters

Agrippa

Voiced by Rick Weiss.

The game's primary protagonist. The tough centurion Agrippabecomes a gladiator in order to avenge his mother, slain by generalDecius, and to thwart the execution of his father Vipsanius, whohas been framed for the assassination of Julius Caesar by MarcusBrutus. The player controls Agrippa throughout the fighting andracing levels.

Octavianus

Voiced by ScottMenville.

The game's secondary protagonist. Octavianus is the delicatenephew of the recently murdered Caesar, and a friend of Agrippa. Heseeks to gather evidence to unmask Caesar's true assassin, and toreveal the conspiracy behind the deadly deed. He is controlledduring the numerous stealth missions.

Claudia

Voiced by Nicole Balick.

Claudia is a freed female gladiator. She is acomputer-controlled ally who assists Agrippa during certain levelsof the game.

• Decius Brutus- Decius is an evil Romangeneral. He is the true murderer of Caesar. He will kill anyone whoknows it. He murders Agrippa's mother and enjoys killing innocentpeople. He is a member of the Valcross. When Agrippa kills one ofhis Valcross members, it became insulting having the best warriorsbeing killed by a low life gladiator and he could not return toRome with humiliation. He battles Agrippa only to reveal that hekilled Caesar. Agrippa kills him with Decius last words saying hewas a general being killed by a nobody will dishonor him (which hedoesn't know the meaning of the words honor and dishonor).(voicedby DanielRiordan)

Story

The premise and story of the game revolves around the murder ofJulius Caesar,and its aftermath. The story is progressed through Octavianus'portions in the game.

After the death of Caesar, Antonius ascends to the throne as the newEmperor. Promising to lead Rome with the dignity and brilliance theformer Caesar did, he is cheered and loved by everyone.

General Agrippa - after a successful raid against a Barbarianoutpost - is told that Julius Caesar has been murdered. Shocked, hereturns to the ForoRomano, where he is told that his father, Vipsanius, has beenframed for the murder. To make matters worse, his mother has beencondemned to death. Agrippa cannot accept this, and decides to freehis mother by killing her guards. Before they can escape the city,however, she is killed by General Decius, who then defeats Agrippain battle. Before he is killed, however, Agrippa is rescued byClaudia, a female gladiator. After they are safely away, she tellshim that a tournament is to be held to determine Vipsanius'executioner, and that Decius is to compete in the final round.Knowing he cannot return to Rome a free man, he decides to become agladiator and compete inthe tournament.

Meanwhile, Octavianus decides to look into the matter himself.Through various endeavors into the Roman Senate, he finds out that indeed,Vipsanius is not the true murderer of Caesar. The dying Cicero informs Octavianus that a group ofconspirators are the ones responsible for the murder. One by one,select Roman Senators are murdered, leading Octavianus to believethat someone does not want them to talk.

As Agrippa continues to advance in rounds, he learns that hisowner, Sextus, has more than his share of secrets. Towards the endof the game, he accepts a proposal from the Egyptian twins Iris andCharmian, whose mistress is hinted to be Cleopatra, to assassinatesomeone of great importance. He then disappears for a time, only toreappear an assassin. His father, Pompey, was defeated in battle by Caesar'stroops, and Sextus wants revenge. Since Octavianus is Caesar'simmediate family, and thus true heir to the throne, Sextus goesafter him, but is stopped by Claudia. Octavianus is arrested forhis snooping by Maecenas, Antonius's secretary, soon after.

During the final, decisive match between Agrippa and Decius,Maecenas reveals to the masses of Rome that Caesar was not killed.Instead, his assassins murdered a double. They were employed bynone other than Antonius, who found out that he was not reallyCaesar's heir. In the ensuing argument, it is revealed to thepublic that Decius is the Caesar double's true killer. Thetournament was articulated by Maecenas in order to reveal theconspiracy and Caesar's true heir to a wide audience. Outraged,Antonius orders Decius to murder Maecenas, Vipsanius, andOctavianus, but Agrippa steps in, and defeats Decius for the finaltime.

Antonius decides to fight Agrippa himself, but loses. As guardstake him away, Sextus and his army climb the walls of the Colosseum and demandAntonius. Agrippa rejoins the Roman army in taking back the streetsfrom Sextus' army, joined by Claudia soon after. As they meetSextus at the docks, Claudia pleads that he not fight Agrippa, butis knocked away. She regains consciousness just as Agrippa stabsSextus. Agrippa himself begs him to give up, but before Sextus canrespond, Antonius' ship fires at a lighthouse behind Sextus. As itbegins to fall over, he begins to reminisce about his early dayswith Claudia. He calls out to her one more time before thelighthouse falls and crushes him. Agrippa and Claudia mourn hisdeath, and Agrippa decides to go after Antonius along with theRoman navy.

After reaching the flagship, Agrippa battles Antonius, anddefeats him. Antonius utters one last laugh before falling into theriver dead. When Agrippa and Octavianus return to Rome, theyreceived a hero's welcome. The two find Claudia mourning Sextus ona cliff overlooking the docks. She tells them that she is leavingRome to travel the world. As she leaves, Agrippa asks her to comeback and visit some day. She smiles at him, turns away, and walksoff. Octavianus vows to seek the Pax Romana, and Agrippa vows to help him anyway he can.

There is a final game revelation after the end credits. Iris andCharmian ask each other if they're ready, and state that it's timeto tell their mistress that they've reached the end of thebeginning.

Dagger

Weapon used by all Low-Sized enemies in all Arenas(Shortrange,Secondary Weapon).It has low power and low resistence.It'sattack speed is high and you can hit the enemy over 3 times.Thereis no evolved version.You can kill the enemy in 1 hit if he is weakand if you hit his back.

Gladius

Basic weapon(Medium range).You get it when you start the gameand on the levels of the City Arena and it has low-medium power anda good resistence to other small and medium weapons. It's attackspeed is high and it allows you to hit the enemy 3-4times withoutproblems.It's evolved version is the Power Gladius.You can find itstarting from the North Arena.It's same as the normal gladius butit has more power,a little more resistence and a little higherrange.Best attack is the supra one.

Mace

Another basic weapon(Short-Medium range).You can get it when youfight against Barbarians and on the City Arena.It has aMedium power and a nice resistence to other small and mediumweapons.It's attack speed is low and it allows you to hit the enemyonly twice most.It's evolved version is the Great Mace.You can findit starting from the North Arena.It's same as the normal mace butit has more power and more resistence.Best attack is the supra oneand it kills the enemy in 1 hit when it's weak(when it walksslow).

Scimiter

Medium-Ranged weapon.You can get it on City Arena from statuesor from enemies.It has a nice power and a normal resistence againstother small and medium weapons.It's attack speed is medium-high andit allows you to hit the enemy up to 4-5times.It's evolved versionis the Power Scimiter.You can find it starting from the North Arenaand.It's same as the normal scimiter but it has a lot of more powerand more resistence.Every kind of attack with both the weapons areokay.If it's maximum charged it cuts off enemies' body parts.Itkills istant when the enemy is weak by cutting his head.

ParmaShield

Basic shield.You can get it on all Arenas.It has a medium-highresistence against small and medium weapons.It can be used asweapon too,but it has a Low range and Low power.

SpikedShield

Isobuster 2.0 final key. Shield stronger than the previous one.It has an high-mediumresistence against small and medium weapons.It can be used asweapon too,but it has low range and medium-low power.
