In order to use Instagram from a computer, you just need to open the web browser and visit www.instagram.com. Login using your Instagram credentials and you are good to go.
Now, the thing is you won’t find any option to use Instagram Direct from the web which is a bit irritating. Personally, I feel that the feature to send Instagram Direct messages from the web should be added. For the time being, I am going to share the solutions which will allow you to send Instagram Direct messages from the computer for free.
Instagram has an app on Windows Store. You can download it to your desktop from here. After you have installed it successfully open it and log in to your Instagram account as you would do on your phone.
When you sign in, you will be able to see your news feed. You can go to the Direct Message folder by clicking on the paper plane icon at the top right corner.
Under that, will be able to see all your conversations. Select the desired one and start chatting.
This method will only work for users who are using Windows 10.
1. Download Bluestacks which is a software that acts as an Android device on your PC or Mac. We shared the same software for our earlier tutorial to install WhatsApp on PC.

2. Once the download completes, Install the software. It is an easy and straightforward process.
3. On completion of installation click Finish.
4. Wait for a few minutes and let it configure by itself. After that, you will get a welcome screen. Click on Right Arrow.
5. Next, it will ask for a Google id. Enter your Gmail id credentials and proceed forward by clicking on the arrow at the right-hand side.
6. When you’re done with all this setup, a screen similar to the one attached below will appear. Click on Search.
7. Type Instagram in the search bar and click on the Instagram app icon when it shows up.
8. You will be redirected to Play Store. Click on Install.
9. The app will get Installed on your virtual Android device (Bluestacks)
10. After installation finishes, open the app. Click on Login at the bottom of the screen.
11. Enter your Instagram credentials and click Log in.
12. Instagram will open on your PC as it would open in Android app. Click on the Instagram Direct icon at the top right corner of the screen.
Now, enjoy sending Instagram Direct message on the computer.
Bluestacks might not be the best of the solutions but it’s certainly the best FREE way for using DM’s on macOS. If you don’t mind spending a few bucks then you can go for the paid app – “Direct Message for Instagram” on Mac App Store.
For Windows 10 users, using the official app is certainly the best bet.

Thank you for your comment. I have updated the tutorial and now it has Instagram application method for Windows 10 users. However, on Mac, I could only find paid apps so Bluestacks still seems to be the best free method on macOS.

As a marketer you can’t ignore Instagram in certain types of niches. Some people have built their entire careers or businesses of off their following. I have always ignored this medium because before there was no way to post to Instagram from your PC. You had to send your picture to your phone and then upload. This was very time-consuming. But times have changed and there is now an easy to way to download Instagram for PC and post directly from your desktop. This makes it much more convenient for social media managers and blog owners. I also have a solution below for MACs.
For example, chanelofficial is an online fashion brand and their Instagram account has over 9m followers. And they get crazy engagement on each post!
Another good example, and a project I personally worked on is Knee Deep Denim, a small clothing company run by RaeAnn out of Tempe, AZ. I built the website. Follow the steps below on how to download Instagram for PC.
The first thing you will need to do is download BlueStacks and install it on your computer. BlueStacks is basically an Android emulator. So it mimics a phone on your computer, that is how it is able to get passed Instagram’s TOS. (Note: BlueStacks is quite large, over 250MB)
Click “Next” on the first agreement screen.
Choose where you want your program data to be stored. I chose the default option for mine and click “Next.”
Leave both the “App store access” and “Application Communications” selected as you will need this for Instagram to work. And click “Install.”
Click on the “Android” tab, search for “Instagram” and click on the “Instagram” icon.
Under One time setup click on “Continue.”
Next click on “Existing” to add your Google account and then sign in. If you don’t have a Gmail account you can create a new one. This step is required because it is emulating an android app from the Google app store.
You can uncheck the next two options since you won’t need them for Instagram to work. Then click on the next arrow.
Next click “Continue” on the setup BlueStacks account part.
You can then simply use your existing Gmail address for your BlueStacks account and click “OK.”

And you now are in Instagram on your PC or Mac!
The only other part you really need to know is how to upload a photo directly from your PC or Mac. Follow the steps below.
Click on the camera icon in the Instagram app.
Then in the top right-hand corner click on “Gallery” and then on “Other.”
Then click on “Pick From Windows.” This will vary slightly on a Mac.
You can then pick from your computer’s local folders.
You can apply filters just like on your phone.
And then share to Instagram.
And that’s it! You can now go crazy on Instagram.
