Pilgrim's Progress is about two delusional assholes wandering around being dicks to people, so it's basically a takeoff of Don Quixote. I read this book during my second deployment to Iraq as well and it took me quite a while to finish it. I had seen this book referenced often and I wanted to read it on my own. The overall consensus is that it is a very compelling book and will pull at your soul's emotional strings with its simplicity and candor. This book although not a difficult read compared to other literary classics will definitely challenge you with its many allegories and metaphors of the Christian life. Wow, it’s like a Christian Dungeons and Dragons — evil giants, magic key, quest. Character names are fun. The name describes the character — Goodwill, Prudence, Piety, Mrs. Know-Nothing.
This book is also credited as the first English language novel and only second to the Bible for many Protestants in the 17th and 18th century. Definitely entertaining for the modern reader

Just not for me. It's the writing style and the in-your-face allegories and whatnot. It's just not worth my time as there is the Bible if I want obvious Christianity and fiction which I'll enjoy and don't have to slough-of-despond my way through if I want less obvious Christianity. ;P

The whole book was great, but I've always loved the last bit the best. When Christian and Hopeful read the Celestial City! It's so wonderful and amazing! And that small part when Ignorance arrives - from riding the rowboat across the river - I always smile, because I remember it so well in the movie! Even though he went to Hell in the end, it still made me laugh when he so proudly rowed across that dangerous river!

What a wonderful book. This is one to ponder! Without a doubt, it is a commitment to read “The Pilgrim’s Progress.” It is not one to skim. Every passage has meaning to study and it will take time BUT it is time well spent.
I do recommend reading a version that includes Bunyan’s own marginal notes. Reading with a friend or a group is a good suggestion because you will want to discuss as you read! Ask questions of another if there are parts that are difficult. A commentary may also be helpful. I fo..more

Reads like satire, but just.. isn't? I feel like it's mocking itself but I really don't think it is?
It's just really hard to take this book seriously. It's incredibly dated, mind-numbingly boring, and obscenely moralizing. This book felt like my entire childhood of nuns making me kneel on the hard marble floor for laughing in chapel on Friday mornings.

I first read Bunyan's masterpiece in college. It was lost on my youth. Being groomed by some thoughtful literature professors who had an allergic reaction to allegory I found the book dull on every level. I thought it was trite, preachy, simplistic, and didn't connect with it on an emotional level.
I picked up the book again because of a nagging suspicion that it was me, not Bunyan that failed in our first meeting. I'm so glad I did.

Shelly rated it liked it Dec 15, I owe so much to the phenomenal Martina Bex, as it was her lessons that initially guided my planning, and I carkl to refer to her during the entire journey. The song is Ave que emigra by Gaby Moreno from Guatemala. Will their will to survive be enough to help them escape and reunite? There are some superb lesson plans and activities that have been developed by Martina Bex and Profe Hanson.

Although it may sound ridiculous, I am loving this novel more than ever! Choose two characters from the book.
