I had that issue with my 2004 Grand Cherokee, just as one post here mentioned, it was the thicker orange with white wire within the rubber boot at the driver door hinge. It looked like it was cut clean through and a had a four inch gap between the two ends, almost looked like they were never connected.
electrical problem
Three out of 4 doors had wires that snapped. All they needed to do was add another inch and these problems would never of happened. Even if you want to replace them you can't find a dealer that you can get the harness from.

problemMy jeep has been in the shop 3 times for related electrical problems and currently has a related problem again AND has developed new problems. I've almost come to the conclusion that I need to dump it and if I do, I certainly won't buy another one.

problem #2Interior lights won't Dim, when doors are closed, Information Center says Door is open, when it is closed, Controls won't work when Driver door is open? The 2004 Jeeps are known for this problem. THE WIRES ARE EITHER TOO LONG OR TOO SHORT, AND WHEN THE DOOR IS CLOSED, THEY CRIMP AND CRIMP AND CRIMP ANNNNNND CRIMP, AND EVENTUALLY BREAK. The black accordian looking tube when you open the driver side door has broken (Most Common) or Corroded Wires inside. It can be fixed with a simple wiring repair to the Wire Harness. Repair cost could range from $5.00 - $200. If you know what they are doing, cost is minimal. If you have no idea or or not mechanically inclined, cost can be as much as $200 +, depends on who you know;o)
Tools needed:
1. Patients and Small Hands2. Butt Connectors (Blue)3. Additional wire, Maybe4. Wire Strippers/Crimpers5. Needle Nose Pliers5. Flat tip screwdriver
Be sure the Vehicle is off. Remove the according looking rubber tube from the Driver-Side Door, not the body of the Jeep. If you are lucky, you will have only 1 broken wire. Usually it is 2 wires. One of which will probaly be Black and the other Yellow. If they are too short to reach, use the Needle Nose Pliers to pull them out a bit. Use the Butt Connectors, (Better than Electrical Tape), recconnect the wires and put every thing back where it goes, and you good to go. Takes about 1 to 2 Hours. Good Luck;o)
Update from Apr 14, 2015: This Problem is common on 1997-2004 Models. The wire may also be Orange too.

problem #I have had to have the harness in the driver side door Fixed 3x starting at only 10,000 miles. The Windows don't work, the dashboard lights don't work when headlights are on, the doors don't lock. I think this is dangerous, during rainy days you can't see the anything on the dashboard. The Windows can get stuck up or down and you are out of luck if it rains. You can't lock your car and if you are in an accident and the window's are up you can't can't get out of the car. I have to get this problem fixed again, this time they want to replace the whole harness, I have no idea what this will cost.
I do know that this is my last purchase of a Jeep. I have had at least 2 Jeeps in my household for the last 26 years, but that's over, we sold one and are getting rid of this one. GOODBYE JEEP YOU WON'T MISS ME BUT I HOPE OTHERS STOP BUYING FROM YOU AND YOU WILL MISS ALL OF US, I KNOW I WONT MISS YOU.
